Is there a reason why the install script isn't the "correct" way of
doing an install? The current method is tedious, and the script does
all of that for you..

I tried the current script, and there are some problems with it, i.e
it tries to install debs on my CentOS 5.2 machine, but we can solve
this if it's something that is going to be important..

Can you please elaborate on which install script you're referring to
and which is the "correct" way of doing an install?
